The things that make me laugh, weep, and live.

So you want to change your ethnicity? Tired of not being able to take pride in your cultural heritage? Maybe you just want something a little different for governmental paperwork. Don’t worry any longer! Now, for only $19.95 you can own the “Change Your Ethnicity How-To Kit!”

So I noticed that some ethnicities are favored for certain things. Let’s face it: a white male is going to have a much harder time getting anything from the government than a female or a person of another ethnicity in the way of grants, loans, et cetera. At one public university here in Texas, females are preferred over males for veterinarian school. Always. As a policy. While this isn’t an ethnicity, it is an illustration of our culture. Sometimes, your ethnicity can work for you. Sometimes, it doesn’t.

Arguably, everyone experiences times on both sides of this. But what if you want to CHANGE your ethnicity? I don’t answer ethnic questions anymore. But what if I wanted to change my ethnicity for certain purposes?

Is this possible????

You bet.

All you have to do is embrace a culture. Identify with it. The music, its folklore, its heritage, values, the whole schmere. Language isn’t even necessary but it helps.

If you succeed in identifying with another culture then you belong to it and are ethnically of it. I know it’s not supposed to work that way. But denotatively, it does.

Wanna be Irish? Invest in some Pogues CDs.
Hispanic? Start with the Latin Grammy winners CD. I like Juanes and Maria Rita, myself.
Black? Tons of great music. Flip over to BET.

Think I’m being flippant? I’m serious. Walk through a local high school; kids switch and blend cultures daily. They know all about it and take advantage of it; why not adults too?
