The things that make me laugh, weep, and live.
What is it and how to make it

You know, as I wrote the article on the tomatoes, I found myself wanting to tell you to cook them to the color of a chicken fried steak.

But then I heard you yanks saying, "what is a chicken fried steak?" You don't know what Sonic is either. Or that we have Dairy Queens, not DQs. But that's another matter, eh?

Grab a tenderized beef steak from your market. Not too thick... look for the kind you'd pan fry. An okie I knew called them minute steaks. Then you wash them. Do your oil the same as for the tomatoes. Sprinkle season salt on them. (Mom likes Lawry's, I like Tex-Joy or whatever you want to use). Flour both sides. Dip in a mixture of egg and milk. Flour again. Now fry the one side until it's about done. Don't try to flip too early. The crust will come off. When you flip, wait for golden brown, and it's done. Enjoy!

We'll talk gravy another time.

Talk gravy soon so people get it. Then go over Chicago-style Italian beef.

The first I'd heard of chicken fried steak was in Sweet Home Alabama "Ya'll hungry? I could reheat some chicken fried steak"

and I was like what the?

Bt that woman made weird sounding things throughout that whole movie like what the heck did she mean by "if I'd known company was coming I'd have put on the dog"

I've got some pickles hot out of the grease

and what's "Balony cake?" (balogna?)

(sorry I'm Australian - we only have pickles on our McDonalds burgers and most of us pull them off)

putting on the dog = doing something fancy (altho it originally meant to be pretentious)

i believe the line is i have some fried pickles hot out of the grease? fried pickles hahahahah

"Tennant does claim that his film's reference to a "bologna cake" is authentic. He says his co-writer's wife makes it with layers of bologna slices and cream cheese. The concoction is topped with olives.

It sounds like a perfect description for his movie, too."

Have I got an easy Bananna pudding recipe for you!

Sunday dinner??? Are you kidding? That's my day of rest! But I'll cook for you saturday night... better yet, you can do it yourself now. : ) I love southern food... we eat Tex-Mex at least once a week if not more. (Supper tonight, as a matter of fact.) I have to say, outside of Texas, it's hard to get good Tex-Mex. I may have to give lessons on cooking THAT!

Trina -- most people here wear shirts that say "billabong" and don't know that it can be a stagnant cesspool... We don't speak Aussie very fluently either. (I explained what all the words in "Waltzing Matilda" meant to my high schoolers this year.) But now, sheila, you too can cook like southern genteel....

Fried pickles are superb. I recommend cutting them thick, not salting them of course, battering them with a beer batter, and then frying until golden. I love them dipped in ranch dressing! I was in Louisiana the first time I'd ever had them... with a plateful of fried aligator.

Bologna cake was a new one for me -- thanks king bee. Most southerners look at me funny when I say I despise bologna, but there you go. My family likes it when it's fried until it has a layer of crispy black on it. I like my hotdogs off the grill with a crunchy black layer on them...

I think bologna cake must have been either OLD south or folk lore. Sounds gross, as I said.

Anyone made chicken fried steak yet? Any Aussies taken the challenge? I'd love to hear it...

btw, six flags was selling fried twinkies, 2 for six bucks! what a rip off... I've never had one, but geez, that's egregious...
