Teenagers don't get enough
Published on May 26, 2004 By Shulamite In Home & Family
Did you hear that teens aren't getting enough sleep?

The average teenager needs 9 hours of sleep according to Betsy Flagler, United Feature Syndicate.

Teens get about seven and a half hours on average. I remember from psychology that lack of sleep can build up and by the weekend you can be zonked. Thats why teens will sleep till 2pm on Saturdays.

I also remember that as a teenager, you're a polyphasic, meaning you sleep more than one time a day. (Late teens through college years.) Anyone remember scheduling college classes around naptimes? I do!

I think the internet certainly contributes to this. I remember going to bed early when in high school. There was really nothing to do after homework was finshed. Television sucked and everyone else was at home. Phones couldn't ring late so that was it.

How many people get the sleep they need? One man told me he forces himself to get the sleep he needs and a brief nap. He's a psychologist and is very busy. He said he'd be nuts if he didn't. Sleep is an investment. Anyone investing?

Sleep?  I don't need no stinkin' sleep!

I sleep about 5 hours a night on weekdays and about 8 on weekends (if I don't have something going on)

I am terrible for having naps, I prefer them to sleeping at night I think! I've never been a good sleeper, even through high school, 5 hours was about average for me! I wish I got more sleep though, I guess it's just not to be though!

A lot of times I'll grab a half hour nap around 2 or 3 in the afternoon...and I feel my best with about 7-8 hours a night--less and I'm grumpy; more and I'm groggy all day.

I am a nap taker when I can get one. I need a lot more sleep than most people I think. I'm not as grumpy. I like to stay up late and work (best creativity time) and sleep late. Sometimes, a nap is just delicious.
